U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last year hit a record high for seizures of counterfeit goods, and the crackdown will continue. According to a new report, CBP and ICE seized 34,143 shipments of goods found to be in violation of Intellectual Property Rights. IPR seizures increased 8% over fiscal 2016 and for the second year in a row, CBP and ICE seized more than 30,000 shipments of counterfeit and pirated products. The total estimated manufacturers’ suggested retail price (MSRP) would have been $1.2 billion had the products been genuine, the agencies said. Wearing apparel and accessories was the merchandise category accounting for the highest number of IPR seizures, making up roughly 15% of all IPR seizures in the year. CBP and ICE have been worked in close partnership on IPR-related enforcement, and their cooperation led to 457 arrests, and ICE pursued and obtained 288 indictments with 242 convictions related to intellectual property crimes last year. E-commerce shipments pose the same health, safety and economic security risks as containerized shipments, according to the agencies, but the volume is higher and continuing to grow. Of the more than 34,000 seizures of counterfeit and pirated goods in fiscal 2017, roughly 90% were found in the express carrier and international mail environments.

Consular Agency Closed, Employees Barred from Traveling Over ‘Security Threat’ – Mexico and The United States

Mexico_Small

The U.S. has closed its consular agency in a popular Mexican tourist spot and is barring its employees from traveling there over a “security threat.” The embassy in Mexico City issued the alert Wednesday night for Playa del Carmen, a coastal resort town near Cancun and Cozumel on the Caribbean. The warnings come after a bomb exploded on a ferry that runs between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel in February and an unexploded ordinance was found on another ferry a week later. The State Department provided few details on what the threat was — saying only that one was received by the embassy in Mexico City on Wednesday. “We take our obligation to provide information to U.S. citizens seriously as evidenced by the clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information we release worldwide,” State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement to ABC News, adding that the agency will provide “important updates when information becomes available.” Both the closure of the consular agency and the restrictions on personnel travel are in place “until further notice,” according to Nauert. Still, Americans were not told to avoid travel to Playa del Carmen. The State Department’s alert system puts it at a “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.”
