State-Sponsored Cyber Theft Stole from Hundreds of Universities – Iran and The United States

Some 320 universities, and 31 terabytes of documents and data, were the target of a state-sponsored cyber theft operation launched by Iran. Nine men still harbored by Iran, ages 24 to 39, were charged in absentia by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday for conspiracy of stealing science since at least 2013. The nine were all hackers, contractors, or associates of the Mabna Institute, which has been stealing secrets from 144 U.S. universities, 176 universities in 21 other countries, private companies, as well as the U.S. Department of Labor, the United Nations, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, among others. “The hackers targeted innovations and intellectual property from our country’s greatest minds,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman for the Southern District of New York. “As alleged, this massive and brazen cyber-assault on the computer systems of hundreds of universities in 22 countries and dozens of private sector companies and governmental organization was conducted on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard.” The theft started with the founding of the Tehran-based Mabna Institute in 2013 to assist Iranian institutions from universities to research organizations, employing hackers-for-hire and contractors to steal the secrets. About 100,000 email accounts of professors worldwide were targeted. The hackers ultimately got access to 8,000 accounts of professors – some 3,700 in the U.S. alone, according to the DOJ. Stolen account credentials paved the way for the theft of research, academic journals, theses, dissertation, e-books, and other materials, authorities said.
