National Cyber Strategy Coming Soon From White House – Washington, United States

An updated national strategy that will guide how the Trump administration handles cyber defense and threats is being debated at the White House and “should be forthcoming in the near future,” a Pentagon official told lawmakers Wednesday. That strategy, in turn, will inform a Defense Department cyber posture document that will likely come out in August, Assistant Secretary of Defense Kenneth Rapuano said. Rapuano attributed the document’s delay to “evolving dynamics,” “a relatively new administration” and “competing views.” Lawmakers have long complained that government cyber operations are hindered by the lack of an overarching cyber policy, though numerous such overarching policies failed to stem the tide of cyber strikes against the government during the Obama administration. Though few details are known about the national cyber strategy, it’s likely to include priorities from a Trump cyber executive order issued in May 2017, former White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert, has said. Bossert resigned Tuesday, a day after National Security Adviser John Bolton took office.

House Panel Probes Campus Espionage – United States

On the heels of a bust of a massive hacking ring targeting American universities, lawmakers this morning will hear from a panel of experts on attempts by foreign nations to spy on and steal federally funded research on college campuses. It’s a problem facing many research universities, which have to strike a balance between being open and collaborative institutions while also protecting the work they do. The joint hearing of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee’s subcommittees on oversight and research and technology begins at 10 a.m. in 2318 Rayburn House Office Building Witnesses at the hearing “will highlight a number of concerning aspects of foreign exfiltration of U.S. research both legal use of basic research in the public domain as well as sophisticated and coordinated plots to steal sensitive research and development,” a committee spokesman said. Those include efforts by countries such as China and Iran to pilfer U.S. research and hack American academic libraries through phishing.

LAWA Completes Installation of Automated Security Lanes at Lax – California, United States

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has installed the final two automated screening lanes in the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in California, bringing the total number of new security lanes up to 14. Carried out in partnership with the US TSA, the automated lanes allow up to five guests to load their trays at the same time thanks to a conveyor system that automatically feeds trays to each position. Trevor Daley, deputy executive director for external affairs, LAWA, said, “We’re very excited that all 14 lanes are now available for use, as they can increase the number of passengers screened by as much as 30% over the old screening lanes, making things faster, more efficient, and less stressful for our guests.” The work began in July 2017 and involved replacing 14 of the checkpoint’s 16 lanes with the new technology. The remaining two lanes were also replaced, but use a traditional screening system to handle odd-sized items. The lanes were installed in groups of two and three while the checkpoint continued to operate.
