Citizens of the United States in Italy should remain on alert in the coming days due to a series of planned protests against recent US-led military strikes on Syria, the embassy in Italy said in a series of travel alerts. “We recommend that you exercise caution, especially in the vicinity of large gatherings, utilize good situational awareness and monitor local media for updates,” the US embassy said in three separate alerts. Counterspy Official: Snowden Leak Damage Increasing – United States

Network

Damage to U.S. electronic intelligence-gathering capabilities caused by renegade National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has increased over the past year, a senior U.S. counterintelligence official disclosed on Wednesday. Bill Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, also said President Trump could expel additional Russian intelligence officers still operating in the United States to further punish Moscow for election meddling. Additionally, Evanina said during a speech at a Washington think tank that the federal government is conducting a long-term damage assessment of the 2015 cyber-attack against the Office of Personnel Management carried out by China. The OPM data breach compromised sensitive records of more than 22 million federal workers, including people who provided personal information as part of applications for security clearances.

US Men Face Life in Jail over Murder-For-Hire Killing – Philippines and The United States

Jail

A former US soldier described as a “ringleader of trained assassins” is facing life in jail after being found guilty Wednesday of organizing the killing of a woman in the Philippines in 2012 for cash. Former US sniper instructor Joseph Hunter, nicknamed “Rambo,” was convicted along with two other men in a New York court Wednesday of conspiring to kidnap and murder as part of a murder-for-hire scheme following a 12-day trial. Hunter, who for years worked as a soldier of fortune, is already serving a 20-year sentence over a range of charges, including the attempted murder of a US drug enforcement agent. Speaking after the verdict, US Attorney Geoffrey Berman described the case in a statement as “horrifying,” with details “usually seen in action movies.” “(These men) conspired to end the lives of people overseas whom they had never met. Today a unanimous jury convicted them for their craven indifference to human life,” he said. Sentencing for the three men, US citizens Hunter, 52, Adam Samia, 43, and Carl David Stillwell, 50, will take place in September, with a maximum penalty of life in prison.
