Brainjacking: A Potentially Deadly Type of Hacking – Worldwide

Hacking the brain of someone with an implanted medical device is not a far-fetched illusion. While at one time a concept relegated to hair-raising Hollywood movies, scientists in Belgium have found that a wireless brain implant, known as a neurostimulator, can be hacked using off-the-shelf materials. By utilizing remote exploitation, hackers can make voltage changes that, “could result in sensory denial, disability, and death.” Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is the procedure that is used to implant neurostimulators. Electrical impulses are then sent into the brain. DBS is has been used to ease the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, tremors and other medical disorders. It has also been used to treat illnesses such as depression and obsessive–compulsive disorder.

Study Reveals US Vulnerable From Tech Reliance On China – United States

A new study warns the U.S. government is dangerously vulnerable to Chinese espionage or a cyberattack because of its dependence on electronics and software made in China. The risk will only grow as China seeks global technological dominance, according to the report for the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. The U.S. government’s annual $90 billion in spending on information technology is devoted to Chinese products — providing back doors that could be exploited for cyberattacks, Jennifer Bisceglie, chief executive of Interos Solutions, which conducted the study, told The Washington Post. “They are doing it,” she told the Post. “We’re not even making it difficult right now.” Under its “Made in China 2025” program, the Chinese government is funneling $300 billion into 10 strategic industries including artificial intelligence, semiconductors and robotics, the Post reported.

Staples Aims To Make TSA Precheck Easy – United States

Staples, the Framingham-based office supply retailer, will soon offer up a unique service to customers: the ability to enroll in the Transportation Security Administration’s Precheck program.
Staples, which has seen its business struggle with the rise of e-commerce, will be one of the first national retailers to offer TSA Precheck enrollment. The program allows frequent travelers to go through an expedited security screening process at the airport. IDEMIA, which offers TSA Precheck enrollment and has its North American headquarters in Billerica, said it will open 50 of IDEMIA’s IdentoGO enrollment centers in Staples stores this summer with plans to expand further. Staples stores in the Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle metro areas will be among the first to provide the service.
