China’s Penetration Of U.S. Supply Chain Runs Deep – China and The United States

China

A new report sounds alarm bells over the extent to which China has penetrated the technology supply chain, and calls on the U.S. government and industry to develop a comprehensive strategy for securing their technology and products from foreign sabotage and espionage. These products could be modified to fail or perform at below expectations, facilitate espionage or compromise U.S. federal and private sector networks. Software supply chain attacks could become more common as the nation collectively moves towards 5G wireless networks and connected devices become more common. The report, authored by Interos Solutions on behalf of the U.S.-China Economic Security Review Commission, posits that Chinese leaders have executed a multi-pronged strategy over the years to put their homegrown companies at the nexus of the U.S. and global technology supply chain, incentivizing corporations to build products locally and acquire businesses with contracting footholds in other nations.

Hackers Behind Healthcare Espionage Infect X-Ray And MRI Machines – Worldwide

MRI

Security researchers have uncovered a new hacking group that is aggressively targeting healthcare organizations and related sectors across the globe to conduct corporate espionage. Dubbed “Orangeworm,” the hacking group has been found installing a wormable trojan on machines hosting software used for controlling high-tech imaging devices, such as X-Ray and MRI machines, as well as machines used to assist patients in completing consent forms. According to a new report published by Symantec on Monday, the Orangeworm hacking group has been active since early 2015 and targeting systems of major international corporations based in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a primary focus on the healthcare sector. “We believe that these industries have also been targeted as part of a larger supply-chain attack in order for Orangeworm to get access to their intended victims related to healthcare,” Symantec said. After getting into the victim’s network, attackers install a trojan, dubbed Kwampirs, which opens a backdoor on the compromised computers, allowing attackers to remotely access equipment and steal sensitive data.

Travel Advisory Issued For Nicaragua Due To Crisis – Florida, United States

Nicaragua

The crisis in Nicaragua has hit home for many South Floridians who have family there, and they spoke with 7News about it after their return from the country. The government has issued a level 3 travel advisory, so those planning to travel to Nicaragua should reconsider their trip for safety reasons. Reportedly, two dozen people, including a 10-year-old boy, have been killed in Nicaragua, as of Monday. The death and destruction started as unrest over a social security reform plan, and then lead to protests over the way the country has been governed. “The Nicaraguan people have said, ‘enough is enough’ and so they have rebelled in this manner,” said Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Lawmakers gathered in South Florida Monday morning to discuss what they want the U.S. Government to do to help the people in Nicaragua through the Nica Act.
