Under-Reporting Of Attacks Gives Hackers A Green Light, Say Police – United States

Organizations which don’t report that they’ve been the victim of cyber-crime are putting others at risk of further attacks and are hampering the authorities’ ability to fight against hackers, the UK’s serious and organized crime unit has warned. The National Crime Agency has issued the warning to businesses as part of its National Strategic Assessment of Serious and Organized Crime 2018. “Under-reporting of data breaches continues to erode our ability to make robust assessment of the scale and cost of network intrusions,” said the report, adding “many companies are not disclosing data breaches, putting victims at risk”. According to figures cited by the NCA, only 38 percent of people have confidence that law enforcement can properly respondent to ‘cyber-dependent’ crime, with the implication that this is partly why victims fail to report they’ve been hit. Even when cybercrime is reported, the police may find themselves unable to convict the perpetrators, because “those that do report may on occasion not be prepared to support prosecution, hampering the ability of law enforcement to act”.

Massive ‘Power Outage’, Training Exercise Starts Tuesday – Wisconsin, United States

What would happen if the power went out across Wisconsin because of a cyber or physical attack on the power grid? State emergency officials are testing that scenario Tuesday by pulling together about 1,000 emergency responders for the first of a three-day “Dark Sky” training exercise. No actual power outages are part of the training. It will take place in Dane, Brown, Milwaukee, Calumet, Outagamie, Winnebago and Fond du Lac counties. About 2.2 million people live in those seven counties, a little more than a third of the state’s 5.8 million residents. “Dark Sky provides an incredible opportunity for our first responders, the National Guard, emergency management officials and our private utility industry partners, to exercise our processes now, so we are better prepared for threats to the power grid,” said Maj. Gen. Don Dunbar, Wisconsin’s adjutant general. Madison-area residents and others in the counties included in Dark Sky could notice the increased presence of emergency responders, military personnel, vehicles and equipment, and also drones that will be used in the exercise. But National Guard spokesman CPT. Joe Trovato said Dane County residents likely won’t notice an increased military or emergency worker presence as part of the drill.

U.S. Issues Security Warning Advising Americans To Be Alert For Potential Terror Attacks – Canada and The United States

The U.S. State Department issued alerts from its embassy in Ottawa, as well as its consulates in Toronto, Quebec and Nova Scotia on Friday, warning of the potential for a terrorist attack targeting American citizens. Three bulletins posted on the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs advised that while the travel advisory for Canada remains normal, officials advised American citizens abroad to take care given an ongoing fear of attacks targeting them. “The U.S. government remains concerned that terrorists are intent on targeting U.S. citizens, including children,” the bulletin reads. “Terrorists may employ a variety of tactics, such as violent assaults and kidnappings. In the past, they have used knives, guns, and vehicles as ramming devices. They may target schools, hospitals, churches, tourist locations, transportation hubs, and other public venues.” Among the steps, the bulletins advise Americans abroad to take care staying alert in public places, keeping a low profile, reviewing their travel routes to avoid becoming predictable, and reporting social media threats to local authorities.
