Violence Flares Up In Nicaragua After Suspension Of Peace Talks – Masaya, Nicaragua

Nicaragua Flag on Wall

Nicaraguan police and masked gunmen clashed with anti-government protesters on Tuesday, leaving at least six dead following the suspension of peace talks to quell two months of deadly demonstrations, a human rights group said. Youths armed with homemade mortars and slings fired off projectiles from behind brick barricades in the southern city of Masaya. Protesters there have kept a police station under siege for over two weeks in defiance of President Daniel Ortega. Alvaro Leiva, a spokesman for Nicaraguan human rights group ANPDH, said at least 34 people had been injured in Masaya and six killed. Police declined to comment. In a video provided to Reuters by Leiva, a woman standing over the body of a man on the ground calls out for help to a line of police officers in riot gear who stand nearby, unmoving. “Help me,” she screams. “He is not a dog.”

Zerofont Technique Lets Phishing Emails Bypass Office 365 Security Filters – Worldwide

Email Signs

Cyber-criminals are currently using a trick that allows them to bypass Microsoft’s security filters and deliver spam and phishing emails to Office 365 email accounts. Called ZeroFont, the technique is not new, being known for decades, and relies on interposing zero-width font characters inside normal text. While a human reader will not see the zero-width characters, the entire text, including the hidden characters, will be visible to email security software. The goal is to trick the email security system into thinking this is a giant block of rambling text, but show human recipients the “lure” of the phishing emails. The technique has been known and used for years, and most email security systems will usually mark emails as suspicious if they contain text with zero-width settings.

Chinese Hackers Targeting Satellite And Defense Firms, Researchers Find – Worldwide

Satellite

Chinese hackers are waging a wide-ranging cyber espionage campaign against satellite operators, telecommunication companies and defense contractors in the U.S. and Southeast Asia, a cybersecurity company said Tuesday. The firm Symantec said it first noticed the campaign in January, although it has been monitoring the hacking group it dubbed “Thrip” since 2013. This year, Symantec detected “powerful malware” in Asia that it believes the hackers deployed to carry out spying operations and potentially destructive attacks. The news comes as tensions are rising between China and the U.S. over cybersecurity issues. Senators voted Monday to reverse a Trump administration trade deal to save the Chinese telecom giant ZTE due to lawmakers’ concerns that Beijing could use the firm’s tech to carry out espionage operations in the U.S. What’s more, President Donald Trump has accused the Chinese government of not honoring an Obama administration deal with China that forbids cyber theft of intellectual property between the two nations.
