TSA Prepares For A Record-Breaking Summer Travel Season – New Jersey, United States

Passengers in Airport

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for another record-breaking travel season this summer, as 243 million passengers and crew are projected to come through security checkpoints nationwide between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Last summer, TSA screened more than 239 million passengers and crew during the summer travel period, which included four of the top 10 busiest days in the agency’s history. It’s likely that some travel days this year may also break into the top 10 list. At Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), TSA sees approximately 58,000 passengers per day come through the checkpoint, but during the peak summer travel days this year, 75,000 passengers are expected to be screened. At John F. Kennedy International Airport TSA officers will screen more than 100,000 passengers and at LaGuardia Airport more than 50,000 passengers will go through the checkpoints on a busy summer day.

U.S. Identifies North Korea Missile Test Site It Says Kim Committed To Destroy

North Korea Parade

The missile engine test site that President Donald Trump said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had committed to destroy is a major facility in the western part of the country that has been used for testing engines for long-range missiles, according to a U.S. official. Trump told reporters after their June 12 summit that Kim had pledged to dismantle one of his missile installations, which would be North Korea’s most concrete concession at the landmark meeting in Singapore. However, the president at the time did not name the site. A U.S. official identified it on Wednesday as the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground, saying North Korea “has used this site to test liquid-propellant engines for its long-range ballistic missiles.” Pyongyang has said its missiles can reach the United States. “Chairman Kim promised that North Korea would destroy a missile engine test stand soon,” the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. There was no immediate word on the exact timetable, and North Korea has not publicly confirmed that Kim made such a commitment.

Rescues Take Place As Heaviest Rainfall Since Hurricane Harvey – Texas, United States

Flooding

Multiple days of torrential downpours have taken a toll on southeastern Texas this week. The worst of the downpours are forecast to diminish on Thursday. The heavy rainfall has caused incidents of flash flooding and water rescues. Houston received a record-breaking 1.26 inches of rain fell on Sunday, nearly five times as much as it had so far in June. This set a new daily rainfall record and also took second place for wettest June day in recorded Houston history. While Houston itself hasn’t had as much rainfall in comparison to surrounding areas, having received less than 5 inches since the rain began on Sunday, it is the most rain the city has had in any one event since Hurricane Harvey. At 10 a.m. CDT Tuesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the state operations center to elevate its readiness level as heavy rain and storms continue to impact the region. “Texas is no stranger to this type of severe weather, and our emergency personnel are ready and well prepared to respond,” said Abbott.
