Feds: Man Smuggled Anti-Submarine Warfare Devices To China – China and The United States
Authorities say a Chinese national has been charged with conspiring with a Chinese military research institute to illegally export U.S. goods used in anti-submarine warfare to China. Federal prosecutors say 41-year-old Shuren Qin, who lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, was arrested Thursday. He’s charged with visa fraud and conspiring to violate U.S. export regulations. Court documents say Qin illegally exported nearly 80 devices used to detect and monitor sound underwater to a Chinese military research institute affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army. The documents say Qin exported the goods to Northwestern Polytechnical University by lying to the U.S. supplier and concealing the true recipient. Such exports are prohibited without a license. Qin is to appear in Boston federal court Friday. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Canada, U.S. Start Sharing Info About Terror Suspects – Canada and The United States
Canada and the United States have begun sharing information about suspected terrorists under a revamped agreement even though the federal privacy watchdog is still studying the possible risks for Canadians. Privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien recently received a federal assessment of the new version of the program known as Tuscan, short for Tipoff U.S./Canada, to gauge its implications for sensitive personal data. Established in 1997, Tuscan is a U.S. list of names and other basic information about known or suspected terrorists. It has long been shared with Canadian border and immigration officers who compare the names of people arriving in, or applying to come to, Canada against the roster. Information sharing was a focus of discussion in March 2016 when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met then-U.S. president Barack Obama in Washington. Public Safety Canada and the U.S. Terrorist Screening Centre signed an updated Tuscan arrangement in early June 2016, with the changes expected to take effect in summer or fall of 2017, say internal memos released under the Access to Information Act.

Orlando Airport First To Use Face Scanners For All International Flights – Florida, United States
Florida’s busiest airport is becoming the first in the nation to require a face scan of passengers on all arriving and departing international flights, including U.S. citizens, according to officials there. The expected announcement Thursday at Orlando International Airport alarms some privacy advocates who say there are no formal rules in place for handling data gleaned from the scans, nor formal guidelines on what should happen if a passenger is wrongly prevented from boarding. Airports in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Washington already use face scans for some departing international flights, but they don’t involve all international travelers at the airports like the program’s expansion in Orlando would. The image from the face scan is compared to a Department of Homeland Security biometric database that has images of people who should be on the flight, in order to verify the traveler’s identity.
