Ukraine Cyberpolice Chief Alleges Russian Hackers Preparing Massive Strike – Worldwide

Ukrainian cyber police have alerted the world to what they believe is an imminent Russian hacking attack. The head of the country’s cyber police, Serhiy Demedyuk, told Reuters Tuesday that Russian agents had been detected laying the groundwork for a huge coordinated strike targeting a wide range of companies, including banks and energy infrastructure targets. Ukraine has become one of the main battlegrounds in the emerging cyberwarfare arena, with Russian hackers regularly attacking Ukrainian military, commercial and civil targets. The most significant event was the 2017 “NotPetya” virus, which crippled government agencies and a range of companies before spreading around the globe, causing billions of dollars in losses. Given the interconnected nature of global networks, any attack that starts in Ukraine could find its way around the world. Last month, for example, hundreds of thousands of routers and network-attached storage devices worldwide were infected by the “VPNFilter” malware. The software can spy on traffic and, if its controller decides, destroy the infected devices.

O.P.C.W Watchdog Gets Authority To Assign Blame In Chemical Attacks – Worldwide

Member nations of the global chemical weapons watchdog voted Wednesday to give the organization the authority to apportion blame for illegal attacks, expanding its powers following a bitter dispute pitting between Britain and its western allies against Russia and Syria. An 82-24 vote provided the two-thirds majority needed to enlarge the purview of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The organization was created to implement a 1997 treaty that banned chemical weapons, but lacked a mandate to name the parties it found responsible for using them. Many participating nations saw the inability to assign responsibility as a senseless hamstring, especially after fatal chemical attacks during the war in Syria. Russia opposed adding a new license to the agency’s portfolio, saying that was a decision that belonged to the United Nations. Georgy Kalamanov, head of the Russian delegation to the OPCW conference, was quoted by Russia’s Tass news agency saying that “the situation in the OPCW can be compared to the Titanic, which got a hole and began to sink.”

AT&T Building Is One of Several Used in NSA’s Secret Spy Program – Texas, United States

A nondescript, square brick building owned by AT&T in Old East Dallas is among several fortress-like structures in major U.S. cities being used to eavesdrop on Americans by the National Security Agency, The Intercept has reported. The Intercept said in its June 25 report that the boxy building at 4211 Bryan St. houses sophisticated telecommunications networking equipment that the NSA uses for its controversial warrant-less surveillance program. The online news publication said it relied on classified NSA documents to identify similar AT&T facilities in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. The Intercept also cited “public records and interviews with several former AT&T employees” as sources in its report. AT&T released the following statement Wednesday afternoon: “Like all companies, we are required by law to provide information to government and law enforcement entities by complying with court orders, subpoenas, lawful discovery requests and other legal requirements. And, we provide voluntary assistance to law enforcement when a person’s life is in danger and in other immediate, emergency situations. In all cases, we ensure that requests for assistance are valid and that we act in compliance with the law.”
