DOJ Cyber Task Force Expected To Release First-Ever Report In Late July – United States

The Department of Justice’s internal “Cyber-Digital Task Force,” created by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in February, will release its first-ever public report later this month at the Aspen Institute’s annual Security Forum, a department spokesperson told CyberScoop. The report is expected to detail a series of security recommendations that the government should consider to protect future U.S. elections from a myriad of different threats, including foreign hacking attempts. A statement by the DOJ previously explained that the Task Force will “prioritize its study of efforts to interfere with our elections; efforts to interfere with our critical infrastructure; the use of the Internet to spread violent ideologies and to recruit followers; the mass theft of corporate, governmental, and private information; the use of technology to avoid or frustrate law enforcement; and the mass exploitation of computers and other digital devices to attack American citizens and businesses.” When Sessions launched the group earlier this year, he requested that an initial report be completed by June 30.

State Department Updates Worldwide Travel Warning Before July 4th – Worldwide

On July 2, 2018, the U.S. Department of State replaced the Worldwide Caution dated January 11th, 2018. The travel warning encouraged U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and practice good situational awareness when traveling abroad. U.S. citizens abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate as information can rapidly change. One easy way to maintain contact with the local embassy or consulate is to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and make it easier to locate citizens in an emergency. The advisory stated U.S. government facilities worldwide remain in a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens.

President Trump To Block China Mobile’s U.S. Entry – China and The United States

The U.S. government moved on Monday to block China Mobile from offering services to the U.S. telecommunications market, recommending its application be rejected because the government-owned firm posed national security risks. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) should deny China Mobile’s 2011 application to offer telecommunication services between the United States and other countries, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) said in a statement posted on its website. “After significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks to U.S. law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved,” said the statement, which quoted David Redl, assistant secretary for communications and information at the U.S. Department of Commerce, which NTIA is part of. China Mobile, the world’s largest telecom carrier with 899 million subscribers, did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
