Hackers Used US Online Infrastructure Against Itself – Russia and The United States

Email on Computer

Exactly seven months before the 2016 presidential election, Russian government hackers made it onto a Democratic committee’s network. One of their carefully crafted fraudulent emails had hit pay dirt, enticing an employee to click a link and enter her password. That breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee was the first significant step in gaining access to the Democratic National Committee network. To steal politically sensitive information, prosecutors say, the hackers exploited some of the United States’ own computer infrastructure against it, using servers they leased in Arizona and Illinois. The details were included in an indictment released Friday by special counsel Robert Mueller, who accused the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, of taking part in a wide-ranging conspiracy to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. The companies operating the servers were not identified in the court papers.

Mariia Butina Charged As Foreign Agent Who Eyed NRA, Pols – Russia and The United States

Russian Flag

The gun-loving former aide to a top Russian official has been arrested and charged with being a foreign agent who conspired with her ex-boss to infiltrate politically powerful U.S. organizations and push Moscow’s agenda. Mariia Butina, 29, who came to the U.S. in August 2016 on a student visa, previously served as a special assistant to a Kremlin crony whose description in court papers matches that of Alexander Torshin. Torshin is a former senator and deputy head of Russia’s central bank who is close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in April 2018 and has been accused of links to organized crime, as NBC News has previously reported. “Butina and Torshin took steps to develop relationships with American politicians in order to establish private, or as she called them ‘back channel’ lines of communication,'” according to an FBI affidavit.

Possible Serial Killer Sought In Houston-Area Manhunt – Texas, United States

Houston Police

RA manhunt is underway for a “person of strong interest” in a violent crime spree that has left at least three people dead in four days, reports CBS Houston affiliate KHOU-TV. The killing spree started Friday with the slaying of a widow who liked to read the Bible and surprise neighbors with homemade cookies. Houston police announced Monday that murders in two mattress stores could be linked to the killing of the woman, along with other unsolved crimes. They’ve identified 46-year-old Jose Rodriguez as a suspect in the violent crime spree. Police Chief Art Acevedo and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez held a rare joint news conference Monday evening to warn the public about this “threat to the community.” Rodriguez hasn’t been charged in the crimes, but Gonzalez tweeted he’s “considered a serial killer, armed and dangerous.” “He’s been on a rampage in a series of murders,” Acevedo said. “Let’s get this man off the street as soon as possible.”
