Microsoft Says Russia Has Tried To Hack 3 Campaigns In The 2018 Election – United States

A group of hackers believed to be tied to Russia’s military have launched spear-phishing campaigns against at least three candidates running for election in 2018, a Microsoft executive said Thursday. Tom Burt, a vice president for customer security at Microsoft, said at the Aspen Security Forum that security researchers at the company discovered the phishing campaigns, tracing them to a group widely believed in the threat-intelligence community to be run by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency that hacked into DNC email accounts and leaked their emails. Burt didn’t disclose the names of the candidates targeted by the hackers, but said they were running for reelection and added, “They were all people who, because of their positions, might have been interesting targets from an espionage standpoint as well as an election disruption standpoint.” Last week, Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 GRU officers for stealing usernames and passwords of people working in Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, including its chairman John Podesta.

TSA Testing 3D Screening Of Carry-On Bags At JFK This Month – New York, United States

The Transportation Security Administration announced Thursday that it will soon begin testing a 3D scanner for carry-on bags with American Airlines at New York’s JFK airport. TSA has been testing “computed tomography” (CT) machines at airports in Phoenix Terminal 4 and Boston Terminal E since June 2017. The test at JFK is expected to begin in late July with a ConneCT scanner from Analogic Corp. TSA has already used the technology on checked luggage for years, but the machines were too big and heavy to install at many checkpoints. As the size has become more manageable, TSA expects the technology to improve security while hastening checkpoint lines because TSA officers won’t have to search cluttered bags by hand as often. “Use of CT technology substantially improves TSA′s threat detection capability at a checkpoint.” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “This partnership will allow us to deploy new technology quickly and see an immediate improvement in security effectiveness.”

U.S. Allies Warn Of Retaliation If Trump Imposes Auto Tariffs – Worldwide

America’s oldest allies warned Thursday they could retaliate against hundreds of billions of dollars of U.S. exports if President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on imported automobiles and auto parts to protect national security. “Should this investigation ultimately result in the application of tariffs on autos, Canada will once again be forced to respond in a proportional manner,” said Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s deputy ambassador to the U.S., at a Commerce Department hearing. That threat was magnified by European Union Ambassador David O’Sullivan, who said the retaliation would probably hit far more American goods than countries have already targeted with import taxes in response to Trump’s new duties on steel and aluminum. “Import restrictions resulting from the present investigation could result in countermeasures on a significantly higher volume of U.S. exports, which we estimate at $294 billion, around a fifth of total U.S. exports in 2017,” O’Sullivan said. “For its part, the EU is proceeding with internal preparations in the event the U.S. were to adopt trade-restrictive measures.”
