Hackers Reportedly Gained Access To Electric Utilities ā Russia and The United States

Hackers working for Russia were able to gain access to the control rooms of US electric utilities last year, allowing them to cause blackouts, federal officials tell the Wall Street Journal. The hackers — working for a state-sponsored group previously identified as Dragonfly or Energetic Bear — broke into utilities’ isolated networks by hacking networks belonging to third-party vendors that had relationships with the power companies, the Department of Homeland Security said in a press briefing on Monday. Officials said the campaign had claimed “hundreds of victims” and is likely continuing, the Journal reported. “They got to the point where they could have thrown switches” to disrupt the flow power, Jonathan Homer, chief of industrial-control-system analysis for DHS, told the Journal. Organizations running the nation’s energy, nuclear and other critical infrastructure have become frequent targets for cyberattacks in recent years due to their ability to cause immediate chaos, whether it’s starting a blackout or blocking traffic signals.

New 3-D Scanners Spot Explosives Older Machines Could Miss, TSA Says ā United States

The Transportation Security Administration is launching new technology that could change the way bags are scanned at airports across the country. The goal is to replace aging X-ray scanners with new 3-D carry-on bag scanners that use the same technology as CT scans. The TSA believes they will spot explosives older machines could miss. The brand-new Analogic 3-D CT scanner can see through just about anything in a carry-on bag to spot a potential threat. The TSA is rolling it out at a checkpoint at the American Airlines terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Concerns about certain explosives getting by some older X-ray machines prompted TSA to ask travelers to take devices larger than a phone out of their bags, and remove food, liquids, and most recently powders. This new technology may bring all that to an end. The Analogic scanner works like a CT machine in a hospital, seeing through even a cluttered bag and giving screeners the ability to zoom in and rotate the bag for a 360-degree view.

Police In Middle Tenn. Continue To Combat Teen Crime Wave ā Tennessee, United States

A teenage crime wave continues across Middle Tennessee. From carjackings to car burglaries, at least six teens arrested in only a matter of days. Thursday night two 15-year-old teens were arrested after police say they car jacked and robbed a woman in Donelson. Saturday night a 13-year-old and 15-year-old were arrested for a carjacking in Goodletsville. Also, on Saturday, Hendersonville police arrested two 15-year-olds for a number of car break-ins and thefts. Hendersonville police said while violent crimes with teens are down from last summer, they still are seeing an uptick in teens crime this summer. “Whenever school is out we allow children to roam a little freer at night and when this happens crime tends to go up,” Detective Lt. Jim Vaughn told News 2. It’s a trend police want to stop, and they need parents to help. “Anytime kids are out of school it seems like this happens, children need to be monitored.”
