TSA Reboots Programs To Help Ease Security Process – United States

Airport Passengers

The Transportation Security Administration is doing a reboot on two important programs designed to help make passenger flight more tolerable for those with disabilities. The programs are TSA Cares and the TSA Passenger Support Specialist program. Both have been around for years, but TSA officials said requests are down. They want the word to get out that security processes don’t have to be stressful to be effective, even to the most vulnerable. “We want to try to make them feel as comfortable while also listening to whatever their questions and concerns are. Try to address that and make them feel comfortable going through the process,” said TSA officer Ariana Love, who has been PSS trained for four years. “We want to make it a smooth transition, while also still meeting within our security and safety needs.” She has had to deal with issues of all kinds.

Ransomware Attack Hits COSCO – United States

Cargo Ship

With this attack, COSCO is now a proxy for the entire industry: A test case to see if shipping lines learned from Maersk’s experience in June 2017. We still do not know exactly what hit COSCO, but reports suggest the cyberattack is far more limited than the one against A.P. Moller – Maersk, which the carrier estimates cost it up to $300 million. Many of the losses were due to lost bookings in its Damco forwarding division and terminal downtime. Because of “some business cooperation in some regions” between the two carriers, COSCO sent customers an advisory stating, “we are now investigating and assessing the possible impacts and will make our efforts to minimize the impacts on our customers.” Maersk, at the time, lost access to its electronic booking system — a feature seemingly still available with COSCO, per Splash 247’s report. “All the vessels of our company are operating as normal, and our main business operation systems are performing stably,” COSCO said in its advisory Wednesday.

Police Arrest Man Suspected Of Starting Wildfire – California, United States

Wildfire

A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of starting a fire that burned five homes and prompted evacuation orders for an entire Southern California mountain town. Brandon N. McGlover, 32, of Temecula was booked on suspicion of setting five fires, including a blaze threatening an estimated 600 homes in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles, state fire officials said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether McGlover had an attorney. One of the fires erupted Wednesday afternoon and quickly grew to 7 ½-square miles (19 square kilometers), fueled by dry brush and trees in rugged terrain. It was burning in and around San Bernardino National Forest, prompting officials to order evacuations for Idyllwild and surrounding communities, which are home to about 12,000 people. No injuries were reported but dozens of horses and other animals and several hundred people, including children from summer camps, went to shelters.
