Facebook Says It Has Uncovered A Coordinated Disinformation Operation – United States

Facebook has shut down a sophisticated disinformation operation on its platform that engaged in divisive messaging ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, the company said Tuesday, an escalation of what a top executive described as an “arms race” to manipulate the public using its tools. Facebook said it discovered 32 false pages and profiles that were created between March 2017 and this May, which lured 290,000 people with ads, events and regular posts on topics such as race, fascism and feminism and sought to stir opposition to President Trump. The company informed law enforcement before it deleted the profiles Tuesday morning. It also notified lawmakers of the activity this week, and said it would notify the real Facebook users who were swept up in the operation. One of the most popular pages had links to the Internet Research Agency (IRA), the Kremlin-backed organization of Russian operatives that flooded Facebook with disinformation around the 2016 election, Facebook said.

Cyber Espionage Via Supply Chain Is A New Threat – United States

The cyber-espionage is in a new light as the community of the US intelligence has declared about the possibilities of attack through the technology supply chain. According to a report, Russia, Iran, and China have the most potential and were the primary contributors to such deception. The infiltration of the software supply chain had warned of the negative infrastructure. It has also cleared that the sensitive information of the US bodies was at risk. According to the Foreign Economic Espionage Report, last year was watershed, which had exposed the 7 events of the crucial software supply chain. This report was published by the NCSC or the National Counterintelligence & Security Center of the US. On the contrary, only 4 incidents similar to these have been reported from 2014 to 2016. The report revealed that numerous attacks, which involved the widespread availability of CCleaner, was booby-trap.

US In ‘Crisis Mode’ On Cybersecurity: DHS Unveils New Cyber Plan To Protect Banks, Power Grid – United States

It’s called the National Risk Management Center, and it’s expected to help the Department of Homeland Security guard the nation’s banks, energy companies, and other industries from major cyber-attacks that could cripple critical infrastructure. Speaking at a government-hosted cyber summit in New York City Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said the US is “in a crisis mode” on cybersecurity. “Cyber threats now represent a greater threat to the United States than physical threats,” she warned. “Our digital enemies are taking advantage of all of us. They are exploiting our open society to steal, to manipulate, to intimidate, to coerce, to disrupt and to undermine.”
