TSA Mulls A Plan To Eliminate Security Checkpoints At 150 Smaller Airports

Security checkpoints would be eliminated at more than 150 smaller U.S. airports under a plan being considered by the Transportation Security Administration. Passengers would instead be screened when they arrived at larger airports after their initial flight. The idea was first floated by the TSA two years ago and was seen then by critics as a transparent effort to get Congress to spend additional money on the agency. “This is completely nuts,” said Mary Schiavo, former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation and an aviation expert. “Perhaps they want an outcry from the public to say ‘Oh, no, no, no, Congress, give them the additional $115 million that they say this would save.’” The proposal raises questions about whether would-be terrorists could penetrate the nation’s air system at the airports lacking screening or commander smaller shuttle aircraft and use them to damage buildings or other infrastructure.

Hackers Charged With Stealing 15 Million Credit And Debit Card Numbers – United States

Federal prosecutors revealed Wednesday that three men are now in custody, charged in a massive hacking operation that targeted businesses in 47 states and stole the credit and debit card numbers of more than 15 million people. Annette Hayes, the U.S. attorney in Seattle, said the three were part of a group that called itself FIN7 and used computer malware to steal customer card numbers from the point-of-sale terminals at more than 3,600 business locations. “The total loss so far is in the tens of millions of dollars.” Outlets of more than 100 U.S. companies were hit in all but three states — Alaska, Hawaii, and South Dakota by sending e-mail messages claiming to request information about catering. Targeted employees were urged to open an attachment, which launched the malicious computer code into the company’s systems. Some victim companies have previously acknowledged that they were attacked, including Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chili’s, Arby’s, and Red Robin restaurants. The hackers also targeted casinos and hotels, the FBI said.

US Planning To Reduce Troops Despite Growing Terrorist Threat – Africa and The United States

The US military is weighing significantly drawing down the number of US Special Operations Forces in Africa despite senior military officials warning that the terrorist threat in Africa is increasing, three defense officials tell CNN. The planned reductions are intended to help better align the US military’s posture with the Trump administration’s new defense strategy which focuses more on near-peer competitors like Russia and China as opposed to counterterrorism missions. US Africa Command, which oversees US troops on the continent, has submitted to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff a plan to significantly reduce the number of US forces in Africa, the majority of which work to help countries there battle terrorist groups. It is not clear whether Secretary of Defense James Mattis will approve the proposal. “No decisions or changes have been made yet to the forces operating in Africa,” Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Sheryll Klinkel told CNN.
