Jury Convicts Anonymous Hacker Who DDoSed Children’s Hospital – Massachusetts, United States

A member of the Anonymous hacker collective was found guilty this week in a trial for a series of cyber-attacks the man had conducted in 2014, including some aimed at children’s hospitals. The hacker Martin Gottesfeld, 32, of Somerville, Massachusetts was one of the main driving forces behind the #OpJustina Anonymous campaign. According to court documents obtained by Bleeping Computer, Gottesfeld learned about the case of Justina Pelletier, a young child that was at the center of a nationwide controversy. According to reports in local US media, the staff at the Boston Children’s Hospital had taken Justina from her parents after finding bruises on her body and thinking she was a victim of parental abuse. During the ensuing legal battle, in which Child Services got involved, the child was separated from her parents and sent to Wayside Youth and Family Support Network, a nonprofit, Framingham-based residential treatment facility that provides a range of mental health counseling and family support services to children, young adults, and families in Massachusetts.

Criminal Hacking Group Targets U.S., U.K. Agencies In Pakistan – Worldwide

A criminal hacking group concentrated in Pakistan has in recent months carried out a string of attacks on American, British, Russian, and Spanish governmental organizations, according to new research from cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks. The hacking collective known as the Gordon Group “has been performing criminal operations against targets across the globe, often using shared infrastructure with their targeted attack operations,” Palo Alto Networks’ threat intelligence arm, Unit 42, said in a blog post Thursday. The group has been targeting foreign government agencies operating in Pakistan, partly through malware-laced Microsoft Word documents, the researchers found. “The spear phishing emails involved in this campaign would most often originate from Gmail accounts masquerading as legitimate individuals, such as a prominent lieutenant colonel in the Pakistani military,” they wrote. It is unclear if the attackers are all based in Pakistan, but they claim to be through online personas, according to the research.

Pakistan Defense Aid Cut By 75% To $150m, Counter Terrorism Rider Junked – Pakistan and The United States

Amidst tensions in bilateral ties, the US Congress has passed a defense spending bill capping its security-related aid to Pakistan at $150 million, significantly below the historic level of more than one billion US dollar per year. The National Defense Authorization Act-2019 (NDAA-19), however, removes certain conditions like action against Haqqani Network or the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) – as was the case in the past few years for disbursement of US aid to Pakistan. The Senate passed the conference report on NDAA-19 by 87 to 10 votes Wednesday afternoon. The House of Representatives had passed the conference report last week. It now heads to the White House for President Donald Trump’s assent. “The legislation reduces the total amount of funds provided for reimbursement to Pakistan to $150 million. This is a significant reduction from the $700 million that was authorized through Coalition Support Fund (CSF) last year,” Anish Goel, who was part of Barack Obama’s White House National Security Council, told PTI.
