MyHeritage, 23andme, Genetic Testing Firms Join Forces With FPF To Develop Guidance To Protect DNA Data – United States

DNA

After data breaches at MyHeritage and Ancestry.com ratcheted up concerns that “data” collected by genetic testing companies could be at risk for exposure or, worse, exploitation, the companies have joined forces with the Future of Privacy Forum to create guidance for handling and protecting DNA and any data drawn from it. Noting that genetic data “warrants a high standard of privacy protection” because it could be used to identify future medical risks, reveals information on family members, contain unexpected information whose full implications may not be known until later or has cultural significance for some, the Privacy Best Practices for Consumer Genetic Testing Services recommends guidelines in broad categories of transparency, consent, data use and forward transfer, data access, integrity, retention and deletion, accountability, security, privacy by design and consumer education.

San Jose Airport Shows Off Facial Recognition For International Flights – California, United States

San Jose Airport

Mineta San Jose International Airport demonstrated a facial recognition system Monday that will make it the first West Coast airport to launch, for all international flights, a technology that officials said has already slashed the processing time for travelers. Facial recognition uses a digital image or a video capture to verify or identify a person. The airport launched the facial biometrics system in June for all arriving international passengers. Starting this fall, it also will be used for all departing international travelers, officials said. By using the technology, the average wait time for arriving international passengers has decreased by roughly four minutes per passenger, federal officials estimated. “The use of biometrics technology will help cut down wait times and enhance the overall experience for our international travelers,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo.

Ex-Marine Sentenced To 15 Years After Planning ISIS-Inspired Terror Attack – California, United States

Pier 39, San Francisco

The former U.S. Marine who pleaded guilty to planning an ISIS-inspired terror attack in San Francisco last year has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Everitt Aaron Jameson, 27, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to charges that he provided material support to ISIS and planned to carry out a Christmastime attack in San Francisco, authorities said. Jameson identified Pier 39, a popular tourists destination in San Francisco, as a target for a potential attack because it was crowded and “explosives could be used to funnel people into an area so that he could inflict casualties by shooting people trying to escape,” according to the Department of Justice. Jameson, a tow truck driver, also posted radical jihadist messages online and offered his employer-provided tow truck for the “cause,” according to FBI officials. Jameson told an undercover agent, whom he believed to be associated with ISIS, that he was “was ready to do whatever they needed done” and noted that his time in the military had trained him for combat and war, according to court documents.
