Google Tracks Your Movements, Like It Or Not – Worldwide

Google Logo

Google wants to know where you go so badly that it records your movements even when you explicitly tell it not to. An Associated Press investigation found that many Google services on Android devices and iPhones store your location data even if you’ve used a privacy setting that says it will prevent Google from doing so. Computer-science researchers at Princeton confirmed these findings at the AP’s request. For the most part, Google is upfront about asking permission to use your location information. An app like Google Maps will remind you to allow access to location if you use it for navigating. If you agree to let it record your location over time, Google Maps will display that history for you in a “timeline” that maps out your daily movements. Storing your minute-by-minute travels carries privacy risks and has been used by police to determine the location of suspects — such as a warrant that police in Raleigh, North Carolina, served on Google last year to find devices near a murder scene. So the company lets you “pause” a setting called Location History.

China Angered At New U.S. Defense Act, To Assess Content

China Flag

China on Tuesday condemned measures targeting it in a new U.S. defense act, saying it would comprehensively assess aspects that beef up the role of a key panel tasked with reviewing foreign investment proposals. China’s complaints about the act come as the world’s two biggest economies engage in an increasingly bitter fight over trade, levying tariffs on each other’s’ products. U.S. President Donald Trump signed a $716-billion defense policy act on Monday that authorizes military spending and waters down controls on U.S. government contracts with China’s ZTE Corp and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. The National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, strengthens the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews proposals to determine if they threaten national security. That measure was seen as targeting China. China’s Commerce Ministry said it had noted the inclusion of CFIUS in the act and would “comprehensively assess the contents”, paying close attention to the impact on Chinese firms.

Homeland Security: Kentucky Creates Travel Id For Airline Travel – Kentucky, United States

Kentucky Flag

Kentucky will start offering two kinds of driver’s licenses in 2019. Only one type of license, the new Voluntary Travel ID license announced Monday, will get you aboard an airplane. The travel ID will cost $2.50 more than the standard four-year license. The ID will be accepted by Transportation Security Administration agents at airport security areas and for entry to military bases. The first new IDs will be issued in January to comply with stricter security standards of the federal Real ID Act of 2005, based on the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. AAA offices are helping promote the change. “We think this information about credentials is a crucial part of travel planning for Kentuckians,” said Cheryl Parker, a AAA spokeswoman. Kentucky has not released a mockup of what the new travel ID licenses will look like yet. People will still be able to apply for a standard driver’s license at county circuit court clerk offices, said Kenton Circuit Clerk John Middleton. There is a catch.
