No End To The Bloodshed: Mexico Experiences Its Most Violent Month Ever – Mexico

Mexico is deadlier than ever. That’s according to the number of homicide investigations opened by prosecutors in July, when 2,599 such cases were tallied an average of 84 per day and more than any other month on record, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday, citing Mexico’s national public security agency. Some of those cases had multiple victims, although Mexican authorities did not provide an exact total. That puts the country on track to surpass 2017 as its most violent year on record since officials started releasing crime statistics more than two decades ago, according to the newspaper. In 2017, Mexico had 25,316 homicide investigations into 31,174 deaths. During the first seven months of 2018, a total of 16,399 homicide cases have been opened, marking a 14 percent increase over the same period last year. Last month’s total, meanwhile, eclipses the previous monthly record of 2,535 homicide investigations that was set in May.

Lazarus Group Deploys Its First Mac Malware In Cryptocurrency Exchange Hack – Worldwide

Lazarus Group, the North Korean hackers who hacked Sony Films a few years back, have deployed their first Mac malware ever, according to Russian antivirus vendor Kaspersky Lab. In a report shared with Bleeping Computer in advance, Kaspersky researchers reveal that Lazarus Group penetrated the IT systems of an Asia-based cryptocurrency exchange platform. The hack took place after one of the exchange’s employees downloaded an app from a legitimate-looking website that claimed to be from a company that develops cryptocurrency trading software. But the app was a fake and infected with malware. On Windows, the app downloaded and infected users with Fallchill, a remote access Trojan (RAT) known to be associated with the Lazarus Group since at least 2016, when it was deployed for the first time in live campaigns. But unlike previous Lazarus operations, the hackers also deployed a Mac malware strain, something they have not done before.

US Declines Invitation To Russia-Led Talks On Afghanistan – Russia and The United States

The United States has rejected an invitation to join Russia-led talks on Afghanistan because they are unlikely to help bring peace, a State Department spokesman said Wednesday, as the Trump administration prepared to appoint a diplomatic veteran as a new special envoy for the war-battered nation. Russia said that the Taliban will be joining the Sept. 4 talks in Moscow, along with representatives of several neighboring countries. It will be one of the insurgent group’s biggest diplomatic forays since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Sibghatullah Ahmadi told The Associated Press in Kabul that the government will not attend the meeting in Moscow, saying the peace process should be Afghan-led. He also said that “a peace process without the cooperation of the Afghan government would not be successful.” The State Department official said that as a matter of principle, the U.S. supports Afghan-led efforts to advance a peace settlement.
