Airport Sets Annual Record For Guns Found At Security Checkpoint – Virginia, United States

Guns

It’s a record that airport officials weren’t hoping to break, but the TSA reports 16 guns have been spotted and confiscated at the Norfolk International Airport in the first 9 months of 2018. It ties the previous annual high of 16 guns in 2015. TSA reports there were 10 guns found at the checkpoint in 2017. “There are certain places you don’t want firearms,” traveler Andy Romey said. “The airport is one of them.” Other travelers said they were shocked the TSA has found that many guns in carry-on luggage. “Expecting today, in 2018, that it might be alright to just fly with it or forget that it’s in your carry-on…that’s the only part that scares me,” Teresa Patel said. TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said she’s heard all kinds of stories and reasons for accidentally packing a gun. “The common reason is that they forgot they had my gun with them,” she said. “The second most common excuse recently is that a wife or husband packed the bag – and I can tell you that neither of this excuses fly.”

Programmer

A computer programmer working for the North Korean government was charged with devastating cyberattacks that hacked Sony Pictures Entertainment and unleashed the WannaCry ransomware virus that infected computers in 150 countries and crippled parts of the British health care system, federal prosecutors said Thursday. Park Jin Hyok, who is believed to be in North Korea, conspired to conduct a series of attacks that also stole $81 million from a bank in Bangladesh, according to charges unsealed in Los Angeles federal court following years of investigation. The U.S. believes he was working for a North Korean-sponsored hacking organization. The U.S. government previously said North Korea was responsible for the 2014 Sony hack that led to the release of a trove of sensitive personal information about employees, including Social Security numbers, financial records, salary information, as well as embarrassing emails among top executives.

Egypt Flag

Egypt’s military says its Special Forces have held drills with Special Forces from the United States to exchange expertise on combating terrorism. The announcement was made in a Thursday statement by Egypt’s armed forces. The anti-terrorism drills come ahead of the “Bright Star” exercise on Sept. 8-20, which will involve additional countries including Greece, Jordan, Britain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Italy and France. The first “Bright Star” exercise took place in 1980, but the Obama administration postponed them in 2011 following the uprising that toppled longtime President Hosni Mubarak, and scrapped them in 2013 after Egyptian security forces killed hundreds of protesters while breaking up a mass sit-in. Last September, Egypt held the war games with U.S. troops for the first time in eight years.
