Miami Is 1 Of 2 Airports Testing New Security System – Florida, United States

Miami International Airport is one of two airports picked by the TSA to test out a new security system meant to stop intruders. The airport said in a statement Tuesday that lessons learned from the pilot program in Miami and at San Jose International Airport will be applied by the Transportation Security Administration at other airports nationwide. The airport says that the pilot program will test emerging perimeter-intrusion detection tools that have been used in other public venues. An airport spokesman didn’t respond to an email asking for specifics. The cost of the pilot program is $5 million and it’s being funded with federal money. The TSA is sending a team to Miami by November to set up the program with airport officials.

Data Breach: Uber Settles With 50 US States For $148 Million – United States

Uber will pay $148 million to settle an investigation into a 2016 data breach that the company was accused of intentionally concealing. The settlement with attorneys general for all 50 states and Washington, DC, will be split among the states. It’s the largest ever multi-state data breach settlement, according to the New York attorney general. The investigation was called to look into allegations that the ride-share company violated state-level notification laws by intentionally withholding that hackers stole the personal information of 57 million users in 2016. The breach wasn’t disclosed until late 2017, when Uber revealed that it paid the hackers $100,000 to destroy the data. In April, Uber settled a case with the Federal Trade Commission, which was investigating claims that Uber deceived customers over this breach.

Mattis Says US Will Look At Possible Base Sites In Poland – Poland and The United States

The U.S. military is investigating sites for a potential base in Poland, a country that has offered up to $2 billion toward developing infrastructure for stationing a permanent American military force. The Pentagon will look at land the Poles have offered to determine if a base makes sense there, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday. “The first thing we have to do is look at what are they offering, because then you size up what it can actually hold and sustain,” Mattis told reporters in Washington, adding no final decisions have been made. “So we are in the exploratory phase of doing just that.” Poland, which has long lobbied for more American troops, made its most overt request during a meeting last week between President Andrzej Duda and President Donald Trump. When Trump said the U.S. was open to the idea of a base in the central European country, considering Warsaw’s willingness to contribute funding, Duda added that any new site could be called “Fort Trump.”
