Port Of San Diego Hit By Cyberattack – California, United States

Port Cranes

The Port of San Diego has suffered a ransomware cyber-attack affecting its IT systems, and federal law enforcement is investigating the source. The port says that the attack has affected its administrative functions related to park permits, public records requests, and business services, but has not interfered with normal seaport operations. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are involved in investigating the attack. “The Port remains open, public safety operations are ongoing, and ships and boats continue to access the Bay without impacts from the cybersecurity incident,” port CEO Randa Coniglio said in an update Thursday. The cyberattack involves the use of ransomware, as seen previously in the “NotPetya” attack on Maersk and APM Terminals last year. Coniglio said that the ransom demand for restoring service involves a payment in Bitcoin, as is typical for ransomware attacks.

LAX Allows Pot In Airport But TSA Says It’s Still A Crime – California, United States

Los Angeles Airport

Here’s another thing travelers can consider bringing when a trip takes them through Los Angeles International Airport marijuana. Just be careful about carrying it onto the plane. A written policy posted by airport police says small amounts of weed may now be brought into one of the world’s busiest airports. But, police warn, possession of any amount is still a federal crime and TSA agents may find your stash. What happens if they do remains a little murky. TSA spokeswoman Lorie Dankers said Thursday that agents won’t take it away but will summon the police and let them deal with it. “TSA’s focus is on terrorism and security threats to the aircraft and its passengers,” Dankers said in an email. “Whether or not the passenger is allowed to travel with marijuana is up to law enforcement’s discretion,” she added. If it turns out a traveler is carrying no more than 28.5 grams (about an ounce), or 8 grams in concentrated form, airport police will simply turn them loose.

Pentagon Withdrawing Large Portion Of Missile Defense Systems From Middle East – Worldwide

US Military

The Pentagon has announced plans for removing defense systems from some Middle Eastern countries next month. Several military officials confirmed anonymously that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has made the decision to withdraw four Patriot missile systems next month from Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, according to an exclusive Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday. The transfer of the systems is part of a larger effort to reposition military forces as threats have shifted. Threats from China and Russia have become a higher priority, while threats from the Middle East and Afghanistan have declined. The missile systems will be shut down and moved next month. Two will come from Kuwait, with the other two from Jordan and Bahrain. They will be transported to the U.S. where they will undergo maintenance and upgrades. Some Patriot missile systems remain in the Middle East, although the removal of four systems is reportedly a “major drawdown” of their remaining defense capabilities.
