Airports Investing In Biometrics For Seamless Passenger Journey – United States

Biometrics

The SITA 2018 Air Transport IT Insights show how biometrics are being incorporated into the evolution of self-service at the world’s airports, and note that over the next three years, 77% of airports and 71% airlines are planning major programs or R&D in biometric ID management. “Secure and seamless travel is a must for the air transport industry,” explains Barbara Dalibard, CEO, SITA. “It is encouraging to see that both airlines and airports are investing in biometric technology to deliver a secure, paperless way to identify passengers across multiple steps of the journey.” “We have already seen great success where we have implemented it at airports across the world. US To Offer Cyberwar Capabilities To NATO Allies – Worldwide

Russian Flag

Acting to counter Russia’s aggressive use of cyberattacks across Europe and around the world, the U.S. is expected to announce that, if asked, it will use its formidable cyberwarfare capabilities on NATO’s behalf, according to a senior U.S. official. The announcement is expected in the coming days as U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis attends a meeting of NATO defense ministers on Wednesday and Thursday. Katie Wheelbarger, the principal deputy assistant defense secretary for international security affairs, said the U.S. is committing to use offensive and defensive cyber operations for NATO allies, but America will maintain control over its own personnel and capabilities. The decision comes on the heels of the NATO summit in July, when members agreed to allow the alliance to use cyber capabilities that are provided voluntarily by allies to protect networks and respond to cyberattacks. It reflects growing concerns by the U.S. and its allies over Moscow’s use of cyber operations to influence elections in America and elsewhere.

Ballot Boxes

The Department of Homeland Security has not detected attempts by foreign adversaries, including Russia and China, intended to penetrate American election infrastructure a month ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, though the possibility still exists that they and other actors may still make those kinds of attempts, the head of the department said Tuesday. “We currently have no indication that a foreign adversary intends to disrupt our election infrastructure,” said DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen at a cyber security summit hosted by the Washington Post. “This is a point in time. We know they have the capability and we know they have the will,” she added, “so we’re constantly on alert to watch.” Nielsen also described China’s efforts to date as belonging to “traditional,” “nefarious,” and “nebulous” forms of foreign influence campaigns, a characterization that marked a departure from the president’s starker allegation last week.
