US Court To Reconsider Shielding Airport Screeners From Abuse Claims – United States

A federal appeals court decided to revisit its recent decision that made it difficult for travelers to sue U.S. airport screeners over claims of abuse at security checkpoints. In a brief order on Wednesday, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia said a 13-judge panel will reconsider the 2-1 decision at a Feb. 20 hearing, in a rare review by the full court known as “en banc.” The court had held on July 11 that U.S. Transportation Security Administration screeners were administrative employees of the federal government, and did not qualify as “investigative or law enforcement officers” who could be liable for civil claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act. While the decision did not address criminal liability, Circuit Judge Thomas Ambro said in a dissent at the time that it would prevent many passengers from obtaining “any meaningful remedy” for assaults, wrongful detentions and made-up criminal charges, something he said Congress did not intend.

U.S. Warns Of New Hacking Spree From Group Linked To China – China and The United States

The U.S. government on Wednesday warned that a hacking group widely known as cloudhopper, which Western cybersecurity firms have linked to the Chinese government, has launched attacks on technology service providers in a campaign to steal data from their clients. The Department of Homeland issued a technical alert for cloudhopper, which it said was engaged in cyber espionage and theft of intellectual property, after experts with two prominent U.S. cybersecurity companies warned earlier this week that Chinese hacking activity has surged amid the escalating trade war between Washington and Beijing. Chinese authorities have repeatedly denied claims by Western cyber security firms that it supports hacking. Homeland Security released the information to support U.S. companies in responding to attacks by the group, which is targeting information technology, energy, healthcare, communications and manufacturing firms.

First-Ever Anti-Terrorism Advisory Conference Held – Pennsylvania, United States

As terrorism, school shootings, and other demonstrations continue to grow, security and law enforcement officials felt it was necessary to hold an anti-terrorism conference for the first time in western Pennsylvania. Several topics were discussed during Wednesday’s Anti-Terrorism Advisory Conference held inside Pittsburgh’s Westin Convention Center Hotel. “It’s important for us to host these kinds of things to share intelligence, to talk about best practices. To have partners from federal agencies, state law enforcement talk about things that are most topical,” said U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania Scott Brady. Scott Brady spoke before a crowd of nearly 500 safety officials. He discussed relevant topics like domestic, international and cyber terrorism, school shootings, lone shooter incidents and how to handle them. “That landscape is changing so rapidly, so dynamically that we have to be meeting on a regular basis and we do that,” said Brady.
