India Risks Sanctions Ahead Of Possible $5 Billion Defense Deal – India and The United States

India could soon be faced with the threat of US sanctions should it go ahead with a controversial $5 billion weapons deal with Russia, a move analysts say poses more of a headache for Washington than it does Delhi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for formal talks in the Indian capital New Delhi on Friday. Among the issues on their agenda, India’s potential purchase of Moscow’s high-tech S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile defense system. The deal, which analysts expect to be signed during the meeting, could potentially open India up to US sanctions under legislation known as Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). The law, signed by President Donald Trump last August, is designed to punish Moscow for its “malign activities.” Last month, the US imposed sanctions against China for its purchases of Russian military equipment, including the S-400, under CAATSA legislation.

Its technology had helped stream the Olympic Games online, communicate with the International Space Station, and funnel drone footage to the Central Intelligence Agency. Elemental’s national security contracts weren’t the main reason for the proposed acquisition, but they fit nicely with Amazon’s government businesses, such as the highly secure cloud that Amazon Web Services (AWS) was building for the CIA.

Russia Claims US Running Secret Bio Weapons Lab In Georgia

Microscope in Lab

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that the United States appeared to be running a clandestine biological weapons lab in the country of Georgia, allegedly flouting international conventions and posing a direct security threat to Russia allegations the Pentagon angrily rejected. The exceptional accusations from Moscow came the same day U.S., British and Dutch officials accused Russian military intelligence of being behind multiple cyberattacks. Maj. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian military’s radiation, chemical and biological protection troops, alleged at a briefing that the lab in Georgia was part of a network of U.S. labs near the borders of Russia and China. The allegations were based largely on materials about the U.S.-funded Richard G. Lugar Center for Public Health Research in Tbilisi, Georgia. Kirillov claimed the documents released by former Georgian State Security Minister Igor Giorgadze showed the facility was funded entirely by the U.S and the Georgian ownership it has on paper was a cover.
