Dunford Warns Against Complacency In Fight Against Terrorism As ISIS’ Caliphate Disintegrates – Maryland, United States

US Military

The U.S. military’s top general warned Tuesday that the international community must maintain its focus on the terrorism threat even as the Islamic State nears defeat on the battlefields of Syria and other security challenges rise around the world. Despite the loss of land in recent years, ISIS and al-Qaida still have the ability and the desire to conduct and inspire terrorist attacks globally, said Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The threat of transnational terrorism is a generational problem that the United States and its allies remain years away from solving, he added. “When the enemy holds ground like [ISIS] did in Iraq and Syria in 2014, they are a much more lethal threat than they are when they are running on a constant basis,” he told reporters Tuesday during a yearly meeting of top uniformed leaders from some 80 nations, dubbed the Countering Violent Extremist Organizations Chiefs of Defense Conference.

FDA Boosts Medical Device Cybersecurity Coordination With Homeland Security – United States

Chemical Lab

The MOA simply formalizes what FDA says is an existing relationship that aims to protect patients who depend on medical devices by enhancing technical capabilities between DHS and FDA and accelerating standards development. It also establishes a new foundation that allows the National Protection and Programs Directorate to “support FDA as an independent third-party for technical assistance and testing.” “Through this agreement, both agencies are renewing their commitment to working with not only each other, but also all stakeholders to create an environment of shared responsibility when it comes to coordinated vulnerability disclosure for identifying and addressing cybersecurity risks,” FDA said in a press release. The agreement comes months after FDA launched its Medical Device Safety Action Plan. Earlier this month FDA published a cybersecurity playbook in coordination with the Mitre Corporation.

A presentation by the State’s Criminal Records and Identification Bureau Chief compares Alaska’s recently released crime statistics to national figures, with Alaska leading in several main violent and property crime categories. Kathryn Monfreda presented her report at a town hall on Saturday that was focused on the flaws of SB91, Alaska’s controversial crime reform package. The presentation was based on Alaska’s uniform crime reporting results for the last several years, including 2017. Monfreda noted a 20 percent increase in reported murders between 2016 and 2017, along with a 40 percent increase in vehicle theft. The presentation analyzed Alaska’s violent crime rates between 2007 and 2017, showing the rates of murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault to be significantly higher in Alaska than the national average by 2017.
