U.S. Allows Airlines To Resume Flights To Ukraine Airports, Black Sea Routes

Airplane

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday it would allow U.S. airlines and codeshare partners to resume flights at three Ukrainian airports and over parts of the Black Sea, citing improved safety and security in parts of Ukraine. The FAA had barred flights over the war zones of Crimea and the Ukraine in April 2014, and expanded prohibitions after Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down while it flew over eastern Ukraine, killing nearly 300 people on board. The FAA said in a notice filed on a government website it would maintain prohibitions on flights over the Crimea and parts of Ukraine. The air safety agency said it would allow takeoffs and landings at Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia international airports in Ukraine, saying operations could be conducted with “minimal additional risk.” Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, prompting international condemnation and Western sanctions, but since then there have been no major outbreaks of violence on the peninsula.

Cyber Security Firm Sounds Alarm About Voter Data For Sale On The Web – United States

Voting

Thirty-five million records of U.S. voters across 19 states, including Louisiana, are for sale on the so-called dark web. The cyber threat firm Anomali Labs found that the data includes full names, phone numbers, addresses and party affiliation. Travis Farral is Anomali’s director of security. “Given the nature of the types of activities that are discussed and go on in this particular forum, you have to assume that they don’t have good intentions with the information,” Farral said. Farral added, “When we saw it and we realized the timing, this being weeks out from the midterms, we didn’t waste any time and we immediately contacted the FBI.” Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said the state database was not hacked and that the voter information being peddled matches public data his offices routinely sells to individuals, political campaigns and political parties. “The personal identifying information of all 3 million Louisiana voters is still protected,” Ardoin said.

Taliban Attack Kills Top Afghan Officials, US General Unhurt – Afghanistan

Afghanistan Flag

A high-level meeting on security plans for Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections had just concluded when an elite Afghan guard turned his gun on the departing delegation Thursday, killing the powerful Kandahar police chief but missing the top U.S. commander in the country, Gen. Scott Miller. At least one other senior Afghan official was killed in the audacious assassination strike that was claimed by the Taliban and underscored the harrowing insecurity in Afghanistan two days before the elections and more than 17 years after the militant group was driven from power. A Taliban spokesman said Miller was the intended target. However, Army Col. David Butler, who attended the meeting with Miller, said the powerful Kandahar police chief, Abdul Raziq, was clearly the target, not the U.S. general. “It was pretty clear he was shooting at Raziq,” Butler told The Associated Press, adding that Miller was nearby but not in the line of fire.
