Critical Infrastructure & Supply Chain Remain Highly Vulnerable To Attacks – United States

This week, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) reminds us that, “our day-to-day life depends on the country’s 16 sectors of critical infrastructure, which supply food, water, financial services, public health, communications and power along with other networks and systems. A disruption to this system, which is operated via the internet, can have significant and even catastrophic consequences for our nation.” October is National Cyber Security Week and week 4 (this week), the emphasis is on the importance of securing critical infrastructure. US critical infrastructure continues to be vulnerable to attacks and has already been compromised as cybercriminals work to gain a foothold in the US. Additionally, cybercriminals have been targeting the commercial sector with as much aggression and skill as their attacks against the government. Unfortunately, some attacks against corporations have national security ramifications, a fact not yet fully realized by all businesses.

DHS Plans To Rejigger Government’s Cyber Sensor System – United States

As government agencies move more of their digital systems to computer clouds, the Homeland Security Department is rethinking how it deploys cybersecurity sensors to detect attempts to compromise those systems, a top official said Tuesday. Currently, Homeland Security’s systems of cyber threat detection sensors, known as Einstein, cluster around a series of trusted internet connections that route information between federal agencies and the broader internet. The government has less visibility into cyber threats if they sneak past those connections. The system of trusted internet connections is ill-suited, however, for massive computer clouds, which shift data around far more dynamically. As a result, Homeland Security is working with cloud companies on a new sensor concept that can catch cyber threats without relying on a series of chokepoints, said Jeanette Manfra, who leads Homeland Security’s cybersecurity division.

Chinese Spies Reportedly Eavesdrop On Trump’s Personal iPhone – United States

Chinese spies are often listening in on President Donald Trump’s conversations when he talks to friends on one of his iPhones, The New York Times reported Wednesday. US intelligence agencies have learned from sources inside foreign governments that China and Russia have eavesdropped on Trump’s cell phone conversations and that China was using information gleaned from the calls to manipulate the president and current policy, the Times reported. Trump’s alleged use of an unsecured phone comes after an election filled with hacks of the personal communications of Democratic political figures and organizations. Individual phones are easy to hack for anyone motivated enough, security experts say. Trump has three iPhones, two of which are for official use and have been altered by the National Security Agency to limit their capabilities, officials tell the Times.
